What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractors provide treatment for disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system. Chiropractic care relieves pain and gradually restores joint function by applying specific manipulations, called adjustments, to restricted joints. Advice on postural issues and other causative factors are given, together with specific exercises to rehabilitate and, in many cases, prevent reoccurrence of a problem.

By promoting a healthy spine and nervous system, chiropractic care allows you to function at your optimum and lead a healthier life.

A variety of factors may affect your spinal health.  The main contributors are:

  • Physical stress/trauma – Excessive or repetitive stress damages joints, discs and associated ligaments and muscles. For example poor posture, work ergonomics, prolonged sitting, being overweight, sleeping in awkward positions, falls, motor vehicle accidents, physical work, repetitive bending/lifting, school bags and pregnancy are some of the common occurrences that load the musculoskeletal system and potentially results in injury.
  • Emotional – prolonged tension/stress from work, home and relationships adversely impacts upon the spine and nervous system.
  • Chemical – poor diet, drugs and alcohol can lead to a lack, or depletion, of nutrients essential for optimal spine and nervous system health and repair.  Examples are chronic poor diet leading lack of calcium and Vitamin D resulting in osteoporosis, or long term excess alcohol consumption leading to depletion of Vitamin B and altered nerve and muscle function.
  • Congenital anomalies and pathological processes.
If your condition is not suitable for chiropractic, or there is no improvement in your symptoms after a trial period of care, then you will be referred to an appropriate health professional.

Do poorly functioning joints always cause pain?

No. Often spine and joint related problems are the result of a culmination of many stressors over a long period of time. Dysfunction of the spinal joints may be present long before any significant symptom is evident.

Who can have chiropractic care?
